When was the Friends of Hampton Roads created?
In 1989 by a group of professional African-American women concern about the plight of youth in the community.
Are they a non-profit organization?
Yes, they are a non-profit organization that provides scholarships for students seeking and continuing a college education.
What type of scholarships are awarded?
They give 2 types of scholarships. The FHR Scholarship is awarded to several high school students, which is given yearly and Katherine Treherne Scholarship for rising 3rd year medical students at EVMS, which is given every 2 years.
Why is the Katherine Treherne Scholarship given every 2 years?
It is awarded every 2 years because the scholarship covers the 3rd and 4th year education for two (2) medical students.
When and where can you apply for the scholarships?
At the beginning of each year, normally in January, information will be posted on our site and distributed to schools within the Hampton Roads area. Applications must be mailed to us via the posted address before the deadline noted at the time.
How much money has been awarded in over 25 years?
With the help of the community, we are grateful to be able to say that we have provided over $600,000 in scholarships to deserving students.
What is our primary objective?
Our primary objective is to raise scholarship funds for students seeking a college education, but we also love to give back by actively addressing other areas of concern in the community.
How can you make a donation now and throughout the year?
You can make a donation on our site by using the donate link or through any of the members of the Friends as well as during our Annual Fundraising Event. Thank you for your support.
