Wounded Soldiers

In 2006, Debbie Hansley, a retired U. S. Marine and member of Friends of Hampton Roads, Inc. asked the organization to help her show the wounded men and women at Walter Reed Hospital that we care about them and appreciate their sacrifice for our country. These were young men and women served and were wounded in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan. These soldiers and Marines were receiving critical care at Walter Reed Hospital before they were to be transferred to a hospital in their communities. Many of their families did not have the resources or time to visit and/or stay with them. The Friends of Hampton Roads saw this as another opportunity to reach out to those in need. We donated various toiletries, books on tape, socks, long distance telephone cards and stationary. The soldiers and Marines loved the gifts and appreciated knowing there are individuals they did not know, who cared enough to visit and bring them special gifts during the Christmas season.
